DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Am'n Watch Co, mvt additionally marked "Made for Howard & Co. New York," Model 1868, 15J, 16S, very heavy 18K gold original HC marked for retailer Howard & Co., gold cuvette engraved "F.E. Chadwick, U.S. Navy.," bow with chain guards, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS with retained KWKS arbors, gilt mvt, s#410300. This movement is from a production run listed in Waltham factory records as having been completed between May of 1868 and March of 1870. Gross weight of assembled watch 87.5 dwt (136.2 g). An interesting piece with provenance to a notable figure in U.S. Naval history; French Ensor Chadwick was born in 1844, attended the U.S. Naval Academy between 1861 and 1864, in 1864 served on the USS Marblehead during its pursuit of the Confederate ships CSS Florida and CSS Tallahassee, and in subsequent decades furthered a storied Naval career that included being president of the Naval War College from 1900 to 1903 and commander-in-chief of the South Atlantic squadron in 1905 before retiring in 1906 as a rear admiral after over 4 decades of U.S. Naval service. CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking sluggishly, winds and sets stiffly, overhaul recommended, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, main plate with spots above "Made" marking and above "Am'n" marking, some haze and lesser spots elsewhere, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches; dial with hl below seconds-register near 6; fine hands, minute with oxide and finish loss to spade and tip, hour with oxide to tip, some finish loss to seconds-hand; case shows ample wear, scattered dents and dings around perimeter of front, band, and perimeter of rear, substantially reduced engine turning detail with full loss throughout front and rear shoulders and in some additional areas elsewhere and with remaining portions being light; tight bow thinned at top, crown shows medium wear; good glass crystal.
